“But why do I need to learn this?”
If you are a parent, teacher, or tutor you probably have heard the question above. Students of any age have probably uttered these words as they struggled to learn a new concept, study for a test, or prepare for a class project. The thought is that they will never use this in normal, everyday life. But nothing could be further from the truth when learning about writing. Effective writing is critical for success across all ages.
Students in school must have effective writing skills to communicate the knowledge they possess about a subject. Regardless, if in Science, Social Studies, Math or Language Arts, a well-constructed response to a test question is critical in ensuring you communicate your main point. This becomes even more important as you take SAT/ACT tests and college-level classes. Professors and other test experts are always looking for the organization and communication of your main point as they assign grades. Being an effective writer just strengthens your position.
But writing is also critical as students enter the adult stage of their life. As they embark on a career and look to advance their position, nothing will be more important than effectively demonstrating the knowledge and professionalism they have in a particular area. This demonstration will often occur in written emails, PowerPoint presentations and other business strategies. Watching as their career grows rapidly will almost always definitely coincide with how well they write and communicate.
Finally, being able to write effectively (including using proper grammar) is just a good life skill to possess. Responding to friends, family, and the public in an effective way will always make a situation easier as people will know exactly where they stand. Communicating effectively through writing from the start alleviates a great deal of miscommunication and the potential for problems.
So, the next time a student utters the question above, you have a wonderful answer. “Yes, you need to learn this and here is why!” Dynamis Learning has the resources to help your child with their writing needs, and we make it fun! We evaluate what your child knows and then determine what path to take so he/she becomes a successful writer. For example, recently we had an elementary level student struggling with writing. We developed an eight-week schedule that culminated with the writing of an informative and persuasive essay. This customized plan alleviated the writing blocks and promoted good use of grammar, writing structure and dialogue.
