“Some people call this artificial intelligence, but the reality is this technology will enhance us. So instead of artificial intelligence, I think we’ll augment our intelligence.” Ginni Rometty
With artificial intelligence (AI) technology advancing at rapid speed, we have entered an era of limitless possibilities for learning and exploring the world around us. As with any new technology being used in the classroom, parents want to know how it will affect their children and in what ways they can help their kids be successful. One of the best ways for parents to support their kids is to make sure that AI is used to engage critical thinking and creative expression in the writing process. To ensure that this occurs, parents should monitor the tasks and processes for which it is being used by their kids so that AI enhances, rather than replaces, the child’s own learning.
ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a popular and controversial new software that is an artificial intelligence chatbot, meaning that anyone can type in a question or statement, and within seconds, receive a “human-like” response. For example, at the touch of a button, ChatGPT can provide a response to almost any question and even compose an email, an outline, or an entire essay.
In some cases, students are using these artificial intelligence capabilities to replace their own intelligence – using ChatGPT to complete their assignments for them – inhibiting their own growth and development in the classroom – especially when it comes to writing.
According to “Teaching Literacy in Your K-12 Classrooms” by the University of Kansas’s School of Education & Human Sciences, “writing plays some crucial roles in the classroom. It helps further cement new concepts by allowing students to describe these items in their own words. It encourages logical thinking by forcing students to organize their thoughts. It also helps them learn how to tell a story, communicate ideas, and record important moments.” The entirety of the writing process, from brainstorming and outlining to drafting and revising, is an essential component of K-12 education, particularly in terms of college and career readiness. Not only does writing development enhance and enrich content in any subject, but it also paves the way for critical thinking opportunities – the foundation of a child’s education.
Furthermore, new technology created in the wake of ChatGPT, such as ZeroGPT, is capable of checking student work for evidence of AI usage, essentially plagiarism at its core, reinforcing the question, is the students’ work “human”?
When ChatGPT becomes the “writer,” it undoubtedly becomes the “thinker” and the “doer,” removing the agency of the child. No matter what college your child applies to or what career they set their sights on, writing is essential – not only just the writing itself – but the critical thinking at its root. In an increasingly technological world, it is important now more than ever to equip our children with the ability to write – the ability to think critically – the ability to be human.
What is the future of AI technology in the K-12 classroom? How can we, as parents, ensure the ethical use of AI tools like ChatGPT in education?
Technology and its increasing presence in our twenty-first century world can be daunting – but imagine how daunting it can be for our children! No matter what advancements or trends come our way, we can focus on consistency with our children – prioritizing learning, critical thinking, and ethical use of technology tools – keeping the human at the heart of education while at the same time embracing what the future has to offer for our students’ success!
If your child’s teacher is using AI technology in the classroom, particularly ChatGPT, and you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to respectfully reach out and engage in an open dialogue with the educator, principal, or school system. As a partner in your child’s education, you have a right to know what technology your child is using in the classroom and how you can best support them in their learning.
We, at Dynamis Learning, believe in helping parents support their children in their education, especially in a 21st century world that is constantly evolving with new technology tools. We work in collaboration with your child’s teacher and school to find out what the teacher sees in the classroom versus what the parent sees at home.
